February
6, 2007
Dear Family and Friends,
On Easter Sunday, 1996, our
19 year old daughter, Nikki was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. She was
only 8 years old. Each member
of our family was ill with a stomach virus and was sick for about twenty
four hours each. When Nikki
got sick with the virus, she never got better.
The virus basically destroyed her pancreas and therefore her
ability to produce insulin. We
rushed our daughter to the hospital barely weighing 38.
We learned shortly there after that our lives were about to change
forever. With a dangerously
high blood sugar of 869 (normal is 70-115), Nikki was immediately taken to
ICU. For the next several hours, we listened to the doctor tell us she may
not make it through the night. He
also explained to us exactly what Juvenile Diabetes was.
Once she was stabilized, we had to learn how to give her injections
and check her blood sugars. We also learned to measure out our daughter’s meals in
accordance to how much insulin she received.
We became our child’s doctor and dietician, as well as remaining
her parents.
As with everyone with Juvenile Diabetes, pricking their finger and
giving injections is the only way of life they will ever know until there
is a cure for this devastating disease.
Although, year by year, researchers have moved forward in finding
that cure, they are not quite there yet.
The insulin that Diabetics give themselves is not a cure.
It is merely a therapy to control their blood sugars.
If Diabetics do not monitor there blood sugars regularly and take
care of “their” disease, they can have life threatening complications
such as blindness, amputation of limbs, kidney failure, and stroke or
heart attack. This is always on our minds as we try to help our daughter
survive by daily making medical decisions that affect her life.
Nikki is in College now. It
is difficult for every parent when their child leaves home.
The difficulty is increased a million times over when you have to
not only worry (as a parent does) what decisions your child is making
while away from you, but are they the “everyday” decisions that will
keep her alive! Nikki is now
in total control of her Diabetes by herself with little or no help from
us. She makes more daily
decisions about her life than many adults will make in a lifetime.
Nikki is truly in control of her destiny.
She was robbed of her childhood, as she had to “grow up” more
quickly than everyone around her.
When Nikki was diagnosed eleven years ago, a friend of the family
gave Nikki a kitten (Friskie). Last month, Friskie, was diagnosed with Diabetes.
Friskie is on the same insulin as Nikki and must receive two shots
a day. What are the chances
of that?
Would you please help us raise money to find a cure for Juvenile
Diabetes in our daughter’s lifetime?
Our goal is to raise enough money so that Nikki and other children
like her can have a future without needles, insulin or complications.
The Wagner Family is going to “Walk for a Cure” on Saturday,
March 24, 2007 at the Siemens Corporation in Arvida Park of Commerce.
Will you sponsor us on this our 11th

A big THANK YOU to all the employees at Jon Francis & Co.
who donated their time & talent once
again at the March 2, 2005 Cut-a-thon.
They earned a total of $880 towards the Wagner family team total.

Insulin is not a cure. Let everyone know it by wearing a CWD
bracelet. They're great for everyone in your family and all of your
friends. Bracelets are made from 100% synthetic silicone rubber.
Bracelets are $5 each to US addresses, $6 each to Canadian addresses, and
$7 each to all other addresses. Shipping is included in the price. Bracelets
are $4 each in quantities of 100 or more for all addresses. Actual shipping
will be added to the credit card charge.
For those who are curious about the $5 price, please note that CWD orders
these bracelets in much smaller numbers than some of the larger organizations
(i.e., benefits for cancer and AIDS). Thus, our per bracelet expenses are much
higher.
The CWD Bracelet is an initiative of CWD's IDYA
teen advocacy group. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Diabetes
Research Institute Foundation to help fund diabetes research and the Education
for Children with Diabetes Foundation to help fund educational
opportunities for children with diabetes.

Dear
Family and Friends,
The walk to cure diabetes was a great success. We raised $23,201. But we
could not have done it without your help. It means the world to me that people
want to help raise money or donate to the cure. My life is very hard and it is
worse being a teenager, but knowing that there will be a cure in the future
makes me feel so much better.
I
just wanted to say thank you for helping us. Also, seeing all the wonderful
faces at the walk, made me so happy to know that you were there helping my life
and other people that have diabetes.
Someday I will have a normal life, like everyone else when there is a
cure. I will be able to eat when I want, without getting sick. Thank you for
making my dream of a cure possible.
Love Always,
Nikki

Dear Family & Friends,
This years Walk To Cure Diabetes was a
wonderful experience, but I would have never been
able to do it without you. The Wagner Family Team
on it’s own raised $22,000 and I just wanted to
thank everyone who donated or even helped raise
the money that we received.
When
teachers in school ask me what my life goal is, I
tell them to find a cure for Diabetes. This
disease that I have is not fun; sitting in lunch
watching all the other kids eating cookies, candy,
and chocolate. Even though it’s not healthy, I
wish that I could eat whenever I wanted (just like
other kids).
One
day there will be a cure and they are very close,
but all that is preventing us from the cure is
funding. The scientists need the money to do
different studies.
So
I just wanted to say thank you, from the bottom of
my heart, for all the money that you are giving or
raising for the cure. Right now a life without
diabetes is a dream, but if we keep on raising
more money, that dream of mine (and all the other
kids with diabetes) will come true.
Thank You!
Nikki Wagner

DADS AGAINST DIABETES
FIRST FUNDRAISING PROJECT
D.A.D. was created by the father of a child with diabetes as an avenue for the fathers of other children with diabetes to join forces to raise awareness of the plight of these children and to raise funds to be used towards a cure, not prevention or maintenance. We all want a cure and we want it now!
We need dedicated and compassionate fathers who can make things happen! You would be amazed to see your co-workers' reactions when you mention your child's 5 finger pricks or two or three injections a day. Until people personally know someone who is dealing with diabetes, they don't realize what our children have to do just to survive - and the more we can educate Johnny Q. Public, the better the chances for obtaining funds for the research projects. Raising corporate consciousness by "Corporate Dads" is a key. Since this is a grass-roots campaign, corporate Dads need to come out of the closet and raise the awareness of co-workers about our children, about
D.A.D. and about our up-and-coming fundraising events, all of which will be focused on finding a cure through the promising new research projects.
D.A.D. wants a cure, not prevention or maintenance.
As an inaugural event, we have located a recycling company who can use the plastic tops and tips of syringes and lancets. If you are interested in curing our children and helping to save the environment at the same time, please save them and send them to us. We will bring them to the recycling facility, and will donate the funds to one of the centers currently involved in new initiatives to identify, isolate and characterize pancreatic stem cells for use in human islet transplantation. This includes support for the derivation of human stem cells.
REMEMBER: SAVE EVERY PLASTIC TIP AND TOP AFTER EVERY SHOT!
NOTE: ONLY THE PLASTIC TOPS AND TIPS WILL BE ACCEPTED. PLEASE
DISPOSE OF NEEDLES AND SYRINGES IN YOUR USUAL MANNER.
Mail the plastic caps and needle covers from syringes and lancets to:

LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER HOLDS BENEFIT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR JDF
Sun Sentinel "Society Line"
November 27, 2000
BOCA RATON- Felix Gabriele, local proprietor of Felix the Tailor shop, recently hosted a fund-raiser at GiGi's in Boca Raton to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Greater Palm Beach County Chapter. The event was a great success, raising just over $1,000 to assist in JDF's efforts to raise funds to support diabetes research and education.
"I decided to organize this social because of one admirable young
lady, Nikki Wagner," noted Gabriele. "Nikki, now 12 years old, was diagnosed with Juvenile or Type 1 diabetes four years ago at the tender age of eight. I am very close with the Wagner family and am quite aware of the disease and how it
has affected Nikki. Since the only remedy for diabetes is a cure, I decided to join in in the fight against diabetes and help raise awareness of the disease and the needed money to support the lifesaving research of JDF," Gabriele continued.
"Felix has once again demonstrated his concern for what our daughter goes through, Having to live with diabetes every day of her life," said Debbi and Jeff Wagner, Nikki's parents. "In spite of the 10 blood tests that Nikki takes daily and the insulin pump that she is attached to 24-hours a day, we still try to her with a normal life. We tell her that one day there will be a cure for diabetes and it will happen in her lifetime. We intend to keep our promise.
Supporting the research efforts of JDF is one way to do this," the Wagners continued.
To learn more about the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, please call (561)686-7701.
